Through the Unthinkable, by Rose Cahalan was a piece about pediatric palliative care written for the Alcalde, The Official Publication of the Texas Exes. The article follows Rachel Carnahan, a social worker on the pediatric palliative team at Dell Children’s Medical Center in Austin. Rachel was Mathaus’ palliative care social worker. We are grateful to Rachel for the exceptional care she gave our Mathaus and our entire family.
Here is an excerpt from the article:
“The word “palliative” comes from the Latin pallium, meaning “cloak.” A cloak is a fitting image for a model of health care focused on encompassing the whole person, not just their illness. Palliative care is often confused with hospice—a narrower subtype of palliative care focused on the end of life—but increasingly, it isn’t only for people who have a terminal prognosis. The basic idea is that a team of doctors, nurses, and social workers collaborates to alleviate pain and stress. Their top priority is to improve quality of life, whether or not a cure is possible.”
“Palliative care is not about death,” Jones tells them. “It’s more about living. In pediatric palliative care we look for ways to reduce suffering and allow kids and families to live life to the fullest.”

Mathaus’ Gifts sent some sweet butterfly kisses to family that received unexpected news after their child’s scans. Uncertain of their next steps they set off to enjoy their moments together and Mathaus sent some sweet butterfly kisses to help them on their way. We are keeping their family close in prayer and we are sending them our love.
It was Mathaus’ Gifts pleasure to be a part of the celebration for Oncology Nurses appreciation week! The nurses were provided a retreat room to rest, rejuvenate and reflect, as well as provided a delicious meal of home smoked Owens BBQ. These women and men care so wonderfully for the children and families on the 4th floor at Dell Children’s Medical Center and the Children’s Blood and Cancer Center, CBCC in Austin. We are grateful for their dedication and care!
There are many challenges for families when their child is in the hospital receiving treatment for pediatric cancer and the side effect of that treatment. Children with pediatric cancer are frequently admitted to the hospital. During these admissions there are feelings of isolation, uncertainty of what the day will bring for your child and a roller coaster of emotions. Additionally, very often these common hospital stays place financial strain on the family; from loss of time at work by the parents, travel costs and food expenses. Mathaus’ Gifts goal is help with this strain by giving assistance for these expenses.
Thanks to your giving we were able to spread love from Mathaus’ Gifts to 10 families at our local Dell Children’s Medical Center!
We remember receiving financial gifts from Mathaus’ supporters, often right when we needed it the most. It is such a pleasure to pay forward this wonderful gift! Thank you Mathaus’ Gifts supporters for making this possible!
